Where to golf in Regina in the winter

Every golfer in Saskatchewan knows the feeling. Somewhere around Thanksgiving, the frost delays get longer, the leaves pile up on the fairways, and one morning you realize your last round of the year has come and gone without you noticing. The clubs go into the garage, and the two of you enter a long distance relationship that lasts until May.

We've lived that cycle more times than we'd like to admit, and it's a big part of why we're building Infinite Golf. Before we get to that, here's an honest look at where to golf in winter in Saskatchewan and what each option is really like.

Option 1: Chase the sun

This is the classic move. Pack the bag, book a flight somewhere warm, and spend a week pretending you've always played in shorts in February.

It's hard to argue with real grass and real sunshine, and if you can swing it, you should. The catch is that it happens once a winter if you're lucky, it costs a lot more than a single round, and you still come home to minus thirty with a swing that's rusty again by March.

Verdict: the best week of your winter, and still only one week.

Option 2: The garage net

You'll hit fifty balls on the first night. After that, it gets cold out there, the space heater blows a breaker, and you still have no idea where any of those shots would have gone, or if you'll improve at all. A net tells you that you made contact and not much else, which is how a slice survives three full seasons of "working on it."

Verdict: better than nothing, barely.

Option 3: A heated range bay or dome

Where you can find one, a heated driving range or winter dome is a solid way to keep your hands from forgetting what a club feels like. You get the ball flight, the reps, and a reason to leave the house.

The trade-off is that you're aimlessly hitting balls instead of playing golf. There's no hole, no scorecard, and worst of all, no buddy beside you swearing his drive was "definitely in the fairway."

Verdict: great for reps, short on golf.

Option 4: An indoor golf simulator

This is where winter golf in Saskatchewan has come a long way. A good simulator lets you play full rounds on real courses, see every shot's numbers, and bring your buddies along for the ride.

The word doing the heavy lifting there is good. Plenty of indoor sims feel like the club-testing bay at a sporting goods store: bright lights, a screen, and not much else. Hours are often limited, and booking can require a phone call during business hours, which is a tough ask when you're trying to fit golf around work and family. If the simulator is off, the room is uncomfortable, or you can't get in when you're free, it stops feeling like fun pretty quickly.

Verdict: the best way to keep playing all winter, as long as you pick the right one.

Option 5: Infinite Golf (yes, we're biased)

We built Infinite Golf because the four of us kept running into the same problem from different directions. Some of us have young kids and can't get out during daylight. Some of us work shifts and lose our weekends. All of us lose half the year to winter.

So we're building the place we wanted to play: a premium indoor golf club at 2044 Dewdney Ave in Regina, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You book a bay online, scan in at the door, and play on IDRA simulators with hundreds of courses. There are open bays and private rooms, lounge seating in every bay, and left and right-handed setups. Bring your own snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, and the bay is yours for as long as you've booked.

The 24/7 part is what we're most excited about. Fit in a full 18 before your 8am meeting, or book 11pm after the kids are down. Your tee time is whenever you want it to be.

Verdict: we'll let you decide that one for yourself.

The bottom line

If you love golf, five months a year was never going to be enough. Take the trip south if you can, keep the garage net if it makes you happy, and find an indoor spot that fits your schedule for everything in between.

Infinite Golf opens in Regina this fall. Join the waitlist and you'll get 24 hours of early access to book your first bay before anyone else. No better time than the present!
