Most business origin stories get polished so many times that they end up sounding like a keynote. Ours involves a car dealership, a closed office door, a would-be business partner who bought a baseball team, and a Reddit thread at two in the morning. We figured the honest version was more fun, so here it is.
It started in a dealership office.
David has worked at a dealership for years. Back when Jay was brand new to car sales, David was his boss, and that working relationship turned into a friendship that has lasted ever since. Jay sees David as a mentor and a good friend, and over the years David became the person Jay would bounce ideas off of, whether they were about work, life, or whichever big plan Jay was chewing on that season.
Jay has always had an entrepreneurial streak. He’s spent most of his adult life looking for ways to be his own boss and get as much out of life as possible, so he has never been short on plans. David had a plan of his own. He wanted to open a golf simulator, and he had someone lined up to do it with him, right up until that guy went and bought a baseball team instead. We’d love to tell you David saw that one coming, but nobody sees that coming.
“Close the door.”
One day, Jay and Kelsey stopped by David’s office for a coffee chat. At the time, the two of them were seriously planning a move to Florida to start a business down there, and they were walking David through all of it. David listened for a while, and when he saw his opportunity, he looked over and said, “Kelsey, close the door.”
That was the start of Infinite Golf. Florida went on the shelf, and the golf sim David had been dreaming about became something the four of us would build together. Brina was apprehensive at first, which is a completely fair reaction when someone you love decides to start a business. She was also happy for David, because like Jay, he has always been an ambitious dreamer, and she knew how much this one meant to him.
The 2 a.m. idea
Once we were in, the real question was how to build something people would go out of their way for. Regina already has places where you can hit a golf ball indoors, and we had no interest in opening one more version of the same thing. We wanted a reason to choose us that anyone could understand in a single sentence.
That reason showed up at 2 a.m., which in hindsight feels a little too on the nose. Jay was up late scrolling Reddit, reading through threads from golfers and simulator owners and trying to figure out how to make the offer stronger. The 24-hour concept kept coming up, and once he saw it, he couldn’t unsee it.
Think about who gets shut out when a golf venue closes at ten or eleven at night. Shift workers who get off at midnight. Parents whose first free hour of the day starts after the kids are asleep. People who work long days and would love to hit balls at 6 a.m. before anyone needs anything from them. For all of those people, normal business hours mean golf happens on someone else’s terms, and we’d much rather it happened on yours.
So Infinite Golf runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you want a bay before work, it’s there. If you want to play a full 18 at midnight because you can’t sleep, it’s there too. Given where the idea came from, it seemed only right.
Why regina, and why indoors?
If you’ve lived through a Saskatchewan winter, you already know the math. The golf season here is short and the off-season is long. Most of us are finally hitting our stride when the courses close, and then we spend five or six months watching golf on TV and making practice swings in the living room when nobody’s looking. Anyone who has searched for where to golf in winter in Saskatchewan knows the options have been limited, especially if your free time doesn’t line up with standard business hours.
We wanted to fix that for people who love this game as much as we do. Kelsey has played since high school. Jay picked it up when he met Kelsey and hasn’t put the clubs away since. David started 6 years ago because of his work buddies, and loved it despite being terrible. He used this passion to book a couple of rounds with Brina and she was a natural, and is still better than him to this day. Infinite Golf is built for golfers like us: people who enjoy the game, know roughly how far they hit their 7-iron, and start getting restless the minute the snow shows up.
What we built
Infinite Golf lives at 2044 Dewdney Avenue in Regina. Inside, there are five simulator bays. Bays 1 and 2 are private rooms, and bays 3, 4, and 5 are open bays. Every bay has both left and right-handed setups, because lefties shouldn’t have to settle for the one bay in the corner.
We run IDRA simulators, and we chose them for two reasons that matter a lot to people who’ve played real courses: the picture quality and the depth of the course library. When you’re standing over a shot in the middle of January, the screen needs to feel close enough to the real thing that you forget about the weather for a while.
The space was designed to feel like a private clubhouse, even though anyone can book. There’s lounge seating throughout and warm, dim lighting, so it feels like somewhere you’d want to hang around between shots rather than a room you rush out of when your hour is up. Bays comfortably fit four players, or up to six if you’re planning more of a hang than a serious round. Bring your own clubs, and feel free to bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks. We’re not a licensed venue, so leave the beer at home.
Getting in is simple at any hour. You book through Birrdi, you get your access code, and you use it on the pinpad by the door. It’s the same process at 2 p.m. as it is at 2 a.m., and because every booking runs through a Birrdi account, every visit is tied to a real person.
What happens next
We’re still locking in our opening date, and we’ll share it as soon as it’s official. In the meantime, the best way to get in early is to join the waitlist. Everyone on it gets two hours of advance access to pre-booking before we open bookings to the public, which matters a lot if you’ve got your eye on a Friday night private room.
We started this because we wanted more golf in our own lives, on our own schedules, and we have a feeling we’re not the only ones. Whether you’re a night owl, an early riser, or someone who needs a good excuse to get out of the house in February, there’s a bay with your name on it.
